When the Pacific Northwest ice storm of January 2024 wreaked havoc on La Conner, Washington, many homeowners found themselves facing the daunting aftermath of weather-induced damage. Among them were Rod and Joan Kirkwood, whose cherished weekend home suffered significantly when a burst pipe led to widespread water damage. Here at Core Contractors, we had the privilege of not just restoring a building, but helping the Kirkwoods get back to their home.

The Challenge

Upon receiving the distress call, our team was quick to assess the extensive damage—a result of a burst pipe due to cold winter weather. The ceilings had collapsed, walls and floors were soaked through, and the home’s pipes needed an overhaul. Our initial restoration estimate was $75,000. However, the insurance adjuster’s estimate came in between $25,000-30,000. Unfortunately, this discrepancy is not uncommon when it comes to insurance claims.

Understanding the emotional and physical toll this had taken on the Kirkwoods and so many of our other customers, we make a commitment to not only to restore our customers home but also to navigate the intricate insurance claims process with them.

Our Approach

Effective communication was at the heart of our strategy. From the outset, we ensured the Kirkwoods were informed and involved in every decision. We provided detailed updates and were transparent about the challenges we faced, such as the delays in insurance adjuster responses and the reassignments that are all too common in disaster scenarios.

Navigating Insurance

Handling insurance claims can be one of the most daunting aspects of post-disaster recovery. We guided Rod and Joan through each step, helping them document the damage, submit the necessary claims, and even liaise with insurance adjusters. When initial assessments from the insurance were lower than the damage warranted, we advocated on their behalf, ensuring that the settlement covered all necessary restoration work. This involved meticulous documentation and persistent communication with the insurance company, ultimately securing a settlement of $87,000, which reflected the true scope of the damage.

Collaboration is Key

The restoration of the Kirkwood home was a testament to the power of teamwork and collaboration. Regular meetings with Rod and Joan helped keep the project on track and made them feel involved in the recovery of their home. Their input was invaluable in making decisions that aligned with their vision and the home’s original character.

Beyond Restoration

At Core Contractors, we believe in going beyond the basic call of duty. Our relationship with the homeowners we serve doesn’t end when the last nail is driven or when the final coat of paint dries. We follow up to ensure satisfaction and provide advice on maintaining the integrity of their restored home against future incidents. For the Kirkwoods, this meant installing an easily accessible main water shut-off valve and providing them with a comprehensive guide on maintaining their newly restored home.

A Foundation for the Future

The restoration of the Kirkwood home stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with the right expertise coupled with genuine care and communication. At Core Contractors, we pride ourselves on turning adversity into opportunity—a chance to build not just buildings, but stronger communities.
